Become the best of the web
Being at the top or bottom of a search engine list can mean the difference between having lots of business or none at all. "Search Engine Optimization" or "SEO" - It is becoming an ever growing trend these days for companies to higher well intentions service providers to bring their business's URL to the top of Google, MSN and/or Yahoo. After all, these three are the big hitters in the search engine leagues, and if you can reach the top on one or more of these then your website is probably also at the top of other search pages such as ask.com. Once at the top, the idea is that your business will increase, or will it?
So how do they do it? What is the secret?
We get these questions quite a bit. Many companies do not even care as much about what their site looks like or what their customer's experience is on the web. They want to be number 1, they need to be number 1. Not to mention that they may very well receive that status (for a little while at least), but being number 1 does not translate into more business unless that website is a few things. At Rethink Web Design we know what those few things are: CLEAR, CLEAN, APPEALING and UPDATED. These are factors that keep a customer on a website and keeps them continually coming back.
Now that you know the real Secret, Here are a few helpful tips to becoming number 1
Google, MSN and Yahoo may have differing approaches to searching the web, but they are all after the same thing: provide the most relevant web pages for the keyword being requested. Notice the word RELEVANT. Search engines only care partly about what is on your page. The rest is all about referrals and references. Link to and links from your website. These are what give your website credibility and relevance to a search engine. Here is how it works.
Referrals. Links to
A referral is when another website links to your website from theirs. Search bots follow every link on every page to see who is referring who. You may have an article on your site about the economy and it may contain great content and great keyword usage, however Google, MSN and Yahoo only care partly about that content, they will rank you based on what other websites are saying about yours. For example, if that same article all the sudden had a link from an economics page on the New York Times website, its ranking could climb right to the top ten overnight. That is because the New York Times is a widely know and used publisher with many links to and from its site. Having a link from such a great site would drastically improve the rating of the site being referred to.
Now getting linked on the New York Times website might be a little hard for the beginner. So here are a few ways to make links to your website by yourself.
- Create a Blogspot about your company, and link to your website address
- Make a Facebook, or Myspace page about your business, band, or organization. Don't forget to add that link to your website.
- Use Craig's List, Google Base, or Ebay to promote your service or product.
- Partner with other local businesses to link to each other.
You see the picture. Getting your website referred to on other websites will show the search engines that your site is relevant. Using these popular internet services will create some instant visibility for your company and its web pages.
References. Links from
It is also important that you link to other relevant sites and articles from your pages. Having an article or site that does not have links out is like a research paper that has no footnotes or references. It is hard for a search engine to believe your site is relevant if you do not note your contributing influences by linking to other pages.
Summary
These tips will hopefully prove helpful in your quest for #1. As you can guess there are many companies also contending for that spot. That is why SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is becoming a full time job. That is because if you don't stay on top of it, #1 today could be #None tomorrow. Just remember that even if you are #1, #2 is only a click away, and if your site is not CLEAR, CLEAN and UPDATED there is not much to keep people on your site, and you can bet they will not be coming back any time soon.
